  Victoria looked over at the couple across from her on the train and smiled. New York was so different from where she was from. It would have been thought scandalous to grope each other as they were doing. Her in the big city it was normal and most people just walked by without a glance. The difference in life here was amazing and she realized that she had been a little sheltered in her life back in the country.

  Rounding the next corner she looked on at the campus. It was huge and she smiled as she thought about the tales she would tell her friends back home when she got there. She half ran and half walked to her dorm and up the steps to her room. She opened the door to find her roommate sitting at the computer with her face flushed. She walked over to see what she was looking at and laughed out loud. There were two men and a woman on the screen having sex.   The two hour drive home was fun talking about their mother’s garden and the new baby. Finally they pulled up to the two-story house and she smiled as she saw her mother standing outside the front door. She walked up and hugged her close before following her inside.   She was standing next to her stepfather at the grill outside talking when she heard the voice.

  “Hey. I heard there was a certain someone coming home from college for a visit today?”

  Victoria turned and then smiled when he walked through the doorway. Jack looked almost the same but better.   “I know. I’ve just been so busy you know. With school and everything.”

  “That’s right. I forgot you opened the restaurant.”

  “Yeah. But I think I’m past that now. You know since my aunt’s death and all.”

  “Yes. I’m sorry to hear about it.”

  “Thanks. She was special.” Jack had been close to his father’s sister. She had played a big part in his life growing up after his mother had passed away. She had also been loaded. She had married wealthy and when she died she had left it all to one person. Jack.

  “I know she was.”

  The evening was spent eating and she saw him checking his phone constantly. She slipped outside when she heard it.

  “No I don’t. Look what you do is your business. It has been a long time Jack. I’m not that young little girl that followed you around and worshipped you anymore.”

  “I wanted to know if you and Drew wanted to go for a picnic tomorrow.”

  “A picnic? You sure? I thought you didn’t want anything to do with us?”

  “Sounds good. Say 11 o’clock?”

  “Sounds good. I’ll pick you up.”

She had planned to stay at the house that day but instead she decided to go sightseeing around home. Maybe she would go by the cemetery and visit her grandmother. Her grandmother had been her best friend growing up. Her mother was working all the time. She didn’t blame her. She was trying to raise two children on her own. Their father left when she was young and they had never heard from him again. Her brother had taken it hard. He had been 10 when their father left. When their mother remarried he was already off to college. She had been 4 when their father left and although she had a couple things she remembered about him, she hadn’t known him. She was 12 when her mother remarried and her step father Earl was the first father she really had.
